Restless legs syndrome and cardiovascular disease: a research roadmap. A response

We would like to thank Dr. Kawada for his comments on our recent article discussing potential mechanisms whereby restless legs syndrome (RLS) might increase cardiovascular disease risk (1). As we have clearly stated in our brief discussion of the possible role of periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS), although patients with RLS very often have concomitant PLMS, the role of PLMS as a mediator of the association between RLS and cardiovascular disease remains speculative. We have recently evaluated the relation of PLMS and RLS to incident cardiovascular disease in the Outcomes of Sleep Disorders in Older Men Study (MrOS Sleep Study) (2).
